The Hidden Superpower of Hyperfocus
There are numerous reasons why I am not a fan of the word "attention DEFICIT hyper activity DISORDER" ... Apart from the use of the words deficit and disorder...I think the term "attention deficit" is also VERY misleading.
In fact, many people aren't aware of the hidden superpower of hyperfocus that many of us ADHD folk possess and if supported correctly, it can be a huge advantage in the workplace.
How I describe entering my hyperfocus state is disassociating with the world around me whilst engrossed in a task (perhaps working hard to meet a tight deadline) or engaged in an activity that particularly interests me.
Some of the advantages we can unlock when in hyperfocus mode may include:
🔓Task performance and productivity improves
🔓Often we can work hard to ensure a pressing deadline is met
🔓Producing high quality work and attention to detail
🔓We may be able to tune out external stimuli and other distractions.
However, like everything in the neurodiversity space, it's important we take a balanced approach. Along with having advantages, being in a hyper focused state can also cause challenges if not supported correctly. For example:
âť—Losing track of the time and missing a meeting/appointment
âť—Not stopping to have a break
âť—May increase burnout
âť—May find it difficult to re-engage in the task if interrupted or become agitated
When we can lean into our brains natural hyperfocus tendencies then we can reap the rewards. It's time we start to celebrate the amazing strengths that can come with ADHD.
Remember, difference not deficit!
